MABUL & KAPALAI, Sabah, Malaysia (September 2008)

I've always had a particular soft spot for Macro photography, so diving one of the world's best muck diving spots was fantastic. Although being part of my whirlwind visit to Sabah, meaning dives were limited, I managed to dive many of the sites around these two stunning islands, and build up a portfolio of shots to add to the 2008 collection. I wasn't able to spot any of the rarer species Mabul is famous for, but that just sounds like the perfect excuse for a return visit!

I was diving from the Seaventures Rig, just off Mabul Island, and was particularly impressed with their 'House Reef', where the majority of my images in this gallery were taken. Species such as frogfish were especially pleasing, as they are not found often in the Wakatobi, and some of the shoaling fish made excellent subjects, as did shooting against the backdrop of the rig's enormous support columns. See some of my favourite images here.

My photography around Mabul and Kapalai used a range of lenses: the Canon 60mm Macro, Canon 17-40mm and Canon 15mm Fisheye. Two Sea & Sea YS-110 strobes provided the lighting in conditions where visibility limited the natural light available.
