On my second trip to Indonesia in 2005 I was lucky enough to have a compact camera wih underwater housing. The main reason for investing in this kit was to give me the opportunity to show friends and family at home the amazine underwater environment I was experiencing. The more photographs I took, my motivation increasingly became a love for the art of underwater photography, leading me to try more techniques and ideas until I had built up fair idea of what my camera could do. On my return to Asia in 2006, I was ready to push my photography a step further, and built up a portfolio of images I am still proud of today, despite the limitations of compact photography. To view some of these images taken in both the Wakatobi National Park and Bali, click here.
I hope this gallery will be of particular interest to those of you who use, or are considering using, an underwater compact camera set-up. It gives an idea of the images that it is possible to get with what is all too often considered a poor alternative to dSLR equipment. I was able to capture a range of subjects, bringing out the colours as I saw them, and leading to images which are pleasing to the eye and impressive to look at, whilst remaining within the limitations of compact photography.
